Life is full of decisions. Some are big decisions, like “my sink just exploded. Who can save the day?” Some are also big decisions, like “donuts are amazing. Where can I get one?” Since Yelp started in 2004, over 40 million words of love and gratitude have been shared for local businesses to help with decisions just like that—and that’s exactly why we’re here! In other words, our mission is to connect people to great local businesses. To celebrate 15 years, we’re sharing the top 100 cities that have shared the most love on Yelp since 2004.

The stories people share on Yelp show that local legends can come in all shapes and sizes, for example: family-owned bakeries that offer a smile and a sugary pick-me-up and plumbers who can save the day in 15 minutes. Not forgetting the amazing people that help us find great plumbers, donuts, and more by sharing their experiences.

To celebrate 15 years of local love, our awesome data science team took a look at which metro areas share the most love and gratitude. The number 1 spot goes to Riverside, CA! We also checked out which metro shares the most “life-saving” businesses, which metro shares more spots that “save the day”, and which metro shares the most places that make people’s day.

Largest city mentioned represents the metro area. Keywords we looked for the highest average of (to total words shared) were “made my day”, “thanks, thank you”, “saved the day”, and “life saving, life-saving”. Full metro areas:

  • “Thanks”, Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, CA
  • “Made my day”, Ellensburg, WA
  • “Life saving”, Kill Devil Hills, NC
  • “Saved the day”, Truckee-Grass Valley, CA

Thanks for 15 years of local love

If you’ve already taken a look at the top 100 things people say thanks for, you’ll know that dog walkers, acai bowls, and pilates spots are among the most loved types of businesses, for instance. We also now know that the most loved business on Yelp since 2004 is Redwood Little School in Irvine, CA. But which metros share the most love? We took a look at reviews across all metros in the U.S. and Canada to see which metros use the word “love” most in reviews for local businesses.

From New Hampshire to Utah and Texas to Colorado, these are the top 100 metros that spread the love the most. (The largest city is listed represents the metro area.) Congrats to Berlin, for the New Hampshire-Vermont metro, for coming in at number 1! Did your city come in the top 100?

Methodology

To determine which metros made the list, we looked at the reviews within each metro. To make sure the list wasn’t biased by larger cities and review density, we took an average of the phrase count to total words per metro, and weighted this down to account for genuine sentiment. We also used that methodology to find out which metro shares the most “life-saving” businesses, which metros share the most businesses that “save the day”, and which metros share the most businesses that people say made their day.
